The Hotel Palácio Estoril is one of Europe's great hotels which has been enchanting successive generations of guests worldwide since 1930. Its long existence is intertwined with the history of Europe and the world. Now, in the 21st century, the Palácio is still grand but at the same time is a completely renovated, up-to-date hotel with modern facilities that manages to be welcoming and cosy despite its grandeur.
During the Second World War, due to Portugal's neutrality, several royal families went into exile in Estoril, which became known as the "Coast of Kings". The Hotel Palácio was the chosen home of numerous members of European royalty and was also the haunt of British and German spies, who could often be found in its bar. Later, these stories of intrigue and espionage inspired famous novelists and filmmakers and the Hotel served as the set for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Basking in a pleasant temperate climate all year round, the Estoril Coast offers visitors a variety of cultural and leisure activities. The golden triangle Estoril-Cascais-Sintra is the scene of numerous international sporting events such as the Portugal Golf Open and the Estoril Tennis Open, the World Windsurfing Championships and international motor and motorcycle races.
Estoril Golf Course
Estoril Golf Course is 25 minutes away from Lisbon and just 3 minutes from restaurants, hotels, casino and the Estoril beach. The Estoril Championship Course started in 1929 and was redesigned in 1936 by Mackenzie Ross. It is known as one of the oldest and most emblematic clubs in Portugal and where two of the Portuguese most important tournaments have been held frequently; the Portuguese Open and the Portuguese International Championship Amateur.
A long list of famous golfers have played Estoril including Ballesteros, Montgomerie, Sam Torrance, Canizares, Gene Sarazen, Peter Allis and Bernard Gallacher.
Overlooking Estoril and the sea, this 5200 metre long course is set among eucalyptus, mimosas and pine trees; giving a uniquely colorful touch that demands excellent tactics, challenges in accuracy rather than distance. The visually stunning par 3 holes, although they vary in length all pose particular challenges. The 4th hole ( The Peppers) is surrounded by pepper trees; the 8th hole (The Tea Cup) - is well known due to the always challenging flag position.
Golf lessons and clinics are available all year round in Portuguese, English and German. Caddies are among the most experienced - some of them have worked for many PGA players while competing in Portugal. Estoril is the only course in Portugal to offer this service. The caddies are always available to advise players on the most difficult shots and reveal some of the course secrets.
After finishing your golf game, you can taste the delights of Portuguese cuisine, while you are overlooking the 18th hole and a spectacular view over the Atlantic Ocean. The outdoor pool is not too far.
